What do FTL and LTL mean?
FTL (Full Truckload) assigns the full vehicle to one shipment. It moves direct from load to unload point.
LTL (Less Than Truckload) fills the vehicle with multiple shipments. Cargo merges at a consolidation point and may pass transfers before destination.

FTL
When does FTL make sense?
When volume fills or nearly fills one vehicle, FTL usually offers a clearer operation. The dock window ties direct to carrier booking.
When FTL fits
- Tight delivery hour or line-side delivery.
- Cold chain or high-value parts — transfer risk not acceptable.
- Border crossing: one carrier, one document set, one communication line.
- When the plan changes, update runs on one line.
LTL
When is LTL preferred?
For low-volume, regular shipments that do not fill a truck, LTL can balance cost. If departure is flexible and transfer is tolerated, the partial model works.

Planning LTL correctly
- Without planned consolidation, waiting builds at the merge point.
- With port cut-off, warehouse wave or plant window, transfer time must enter the route.
- Lock slot and window — not an “estimated arrival”.
- Multi-pickup collection must stay in one operations file.
Hybrid
Both on one operation
FTL and LTL can be used together in one supply chain. Hybrid models are common — FTL for border crossing in Europe, LTL for domestic distribution.

Before the mode label, cargo identity and time window must stay in one operations file. Mode change is read as part of the plan — not a separate phone line.
