What to Consider Before Laser Treatments
General information about skin condition assessment, suitability criteria, and patient preparation before a laser session.
Laser-assisted dermatological treatments may be considered for pigmentation, vascular concerns, scarring, or skin rejuvenation goals. However, not every skin type and every concern is suitable for laser. This article explains general criteria considered before a session — treatment decisions are made only following physician examination.
Why is examination required before laser?
Laser systems work with different wavelengths and target tissues. Skin colour, lesion type, sun exposure history, and medications form the foundation of suitability assessment.
Planning treatment without examination may increase the risk of unexpected side effects or make it harder to achieve the intended outcome.
Key points examined during assessment
- Skin type, phototype, and current sun tan status
- Type and depth of the target lesion or concern
- Active skin infection, open wounds, or significant inflammation
- Recent peeling, waxing, or aggressive skincare treatments
- History of photosensitising oral or topical medications
- Previous laser or energy-based treatment responses
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planned pregnancy
This list is for general information only. Personal suitability is determined by the physician.
Pre-session preparation and sun exposure
Some laser treatments may not be suitable on sun-exposed or tanned skin. The physician may schedule sessions according to skin condition.
Certain products or procedures may need to be paused before a session. These recommendations vary by individual and planned system.
Commonly reminded preparation steps
- Continuing sunscreen use on the planned area
- Avoiding intense sun for the period specified by the physician
- Postponing the session if active skin irritation is present
- Sharing all medications with the physician
Expectation management and follow-up
Laser treatments may not produce final results in a single session; session count and intervals are determined individually. Temporary redness, crusting, or sensitivity may occur — severity varies by treatment.
Following post-session care instructions may help recovery progress smoothly. Follow-up appointments are part of the plan.
