Coast Studio

Cesme / 2023

A live-work house on the Çeşme coast: one room for work, one for living, and a terrace that takes the wind.

Coast Studio is a small house for a writer who wanted to work in the same building she sleeps in, without the two collapsing. We set the workroom to the north and the living room to the south, with a store between them that also acts as a sound lock.

Walls are existing masonry, whitewashed. Shutters are pine, made to the opening rather than to a catalogue. Cement tiles are used only in the wet rooms. The terrace is the third room — unglazed, with a low wall that holds the wind without blocking the horizon.

The store holds books, linen and the winter shutters. It is the thickest wall in the house. Plumbing is confined to one wet room so the two main rooms stay simple.

The house is used through the winter. Heating is a stove in the living room and a second in the workroom. There is no open-plan. The distance between the two rooms is the point of the plan.
