A house near the sea in Çeşme, away from display. The mass was shaped by wind and shade.

The living space was left at the same level as the terrace. White plaster, open stone and dark wood remained as a small number of materials matching the rhythm of the climate.

The pergola and thresholds soften the light that enters. The house was set not to frame a view, but to stand in the shade.

Decisions

Three decisions that held this work.

  • 01

    Joining the levels

The living space sits at the same level as the terrace. There is no extra threshold between inside and outside.

  • 02

    Building the shade

Pergola and thresholds soften the light of Çeşme. The house is there to stand in shade, not to frame a view.

  • 03

    Reading the wind

Mass and openings took their shape from the wind. Few materials follow the rhythm of the climate.
