A linear gallery in Karaköy: two rooms of different light, a store below, and a street room that does not require a ticket.
Gallery Line holds two rooms and a street room on a narrow commercial plot in Karaköy. One room takes north light; the other a controlled roof light. The store sits below. The street room is the shopfront — no ticket.
Structure is the existing masonry, limewashed inside. The floor is continuous. Light is cut with a linen baffle specified with the wall. Furniture is almost absent; the one piece needed is a long oak table that can take a work.
Entry is through the street room before the gallery itself. People can come in without a show. The stair to the store and office drops out of the exhibition sequence.
The gallery has been open two years. The street room is used as a table for the neighbourhood. Shows change rooms; the building does not.
