A house built from the stone of its own site — thick walls, a workshop in the cool of the ground, and a court that holds water.
Stone House sits above a disused quarry terrace outside Antalya. The client asked for a house and a workshop that could be made from what the site already offered. We cut as little as possible, used the extracted stone for the walls, and set the workshop into the cooler ground.
Rooms are few and thick. Openings are deep. A rammed-earth inner leaf steadies the temperature. Water from the roof is held in a court cistern that also cools the air. Bronze fittings were made locally and left unlacquered.
The roof is planted where the span allows it, and stone where it does not. Access is a path cut into the terrace, not a drive. Vehicles stop below; the last fifty metres are on foot.
The house is occupied by one person who works on site. The workshop is the largest room. Living happens in the shade of the court and on the roof at evening.
