North Atelier

Istanbul / 2024

A workplace for a design practice: one long room under a timber roof, a library at the quiet end, and meeting rooms that do not interrupt the floor.

North Atelier occupies the upper floors of a Bomonti industrial building. The client wanted a single workroom rather than a field of desks. We kept the existing timber roof, inserted a steel mezzanine for the library, and placed two meeting rooms as objects in the plan rather than as a corridor of doors.

Light comes from the north sheds and from a new opening cut in the west gable. Acoustic lining is wool, set in panels that can be read as furniture. Services hang in the roof void. The floor is continuous — no raised access, no carpet tiles.

Desks were designed as a family of tables that can be rearranged for a review. Storage is a long oak run against the party wall. The kitchen is in the workroom, not hidden — making tea is part of the day.

The practice works in the round. Reviews happen at a table in the middle of the room. The library is used; the meeting rooms are closed only when a conversation needs a door.
